Do you trust an American to truly evaluate British cuisine? If so, read on...
Competent fish and chips. The fish was flaky and not greasy, the chips generally well-cooked. All was made fresh, which took a few minutes but was worth it. Quite a bit of food for just under five quid.
Service was light but got the job done. Would return again.
Note:
-Scant bike parking nearby - bring a kickstand, or you will be leaning your wheels against the window.
-There is a small fee for card purchases under £5. -

I was expecting quite a good meal after reading so many reviews, but was heavily disappointed. Many of the chips were dark grey (old, bad storage) and covered in tiny black dots (unclean oil) and tasted of old grease.
The fish wasn't bad, but having clean fresh oil can be the difference between a good and bad chip shop and this was bad. -

As far as take away pizzas go this is top notch! I admit I was drunk when I first visited and I seriously questioned my taste buds as I voted this better than Domino's. With this in mind I was forced to (soberly) try again and low and behold I was struck with exactly the same thought! This place really is better than Domino's!
Located on Cheltenham Road, it makes prime location for drunken students returning from town. They do a late night deal of a pizza and chips/garlic bread for £5 - that's right, £5!! The pizza's are all freshly made in a stone baked oven as you wait and they taste really amazing....in fact I may head there now!
Having said that, it is heaving with drunken people at around 2-3am so avoid at this time if possible. -

This is definatley, maybe, perhaps, more than likey, if I had a top 5, would most ptobabley, if the choice had to be made, be a contendor, up with one or two others, but having a good chance of winning, but not for sure, be one of the best fish a chip places I have ever been too! Phew... that was a big step!
Arches combines good service and practicality with an excellent standard of chips (and fish for that matter) All of this has made Arches highly popular and very rarley will you be the only person in the shop (not including the staff, because you would probably be a bit concerned if you went in and absolubtley no one was inside!)..
The Website is very helpful, but don't by pass the shop as they are brilliant inside, also eat in! For a change, it's wierdly liberating getting some fish and chips and not heading outside/home to eat them! -

Cheap and amazing. I got the fish and chips, extra salt, extra vinegar, and they had to make it fresh (what a shame, right?). It was well-worth the wait.
I walked into this place thinking "wow, this place isn't going to be good," and I walked out completely convinced of the contrary. The fish was so crispy and so amazingly good. The chips had amazing flavor too. God, I want to go back to England now.
A friend of mine ordered the pizza, and that looked fantastic too. It's an all-around great little chip shop.
Go here. Seriously.
